Water/Glass
Water/Glass / Kengo Kuma

Kengo Kuma’s design of the Water/Glass villa was greatly influenced by the German architect Bruno Taut, who had praised the architecture of Japan’s Katsura Palace for highlighting nature by being one with it. Taut highlighted two elements of the palace which served to achieve this: the eaves and the bamboo verandas.

In this villa, the layer of water which gently covers the building’s edges are meant to signify the bamboo verandas in Katsura, while the stainless steel louvre over the water signifies the eaves. The water surface stretches out and unites the surface with the Pacific Ocean. According to Kuma, the villa is a type of experimental sight line installation, a facility which incorporates a variety of architectural and natural elements.
