The Lightning Field (1977) is a work of Land Art by sculptor Walter De Maria situated in Catron County, New Mexico. It is comprised of 400 stainless steel poles arranged in a rectangular 1 mile by 1 kilometre grid array. The poles are spaced 220 feet apart and have solid pointed tips that define a horizontal plane. The installation is meant to be viewed as well as walked in.
